Research Project
At the Crossroads of Culture: Neighborhood Life of Tabriz Armenians in the 19th Century
This project investigates the social, cultural, and economic life of the Armenian community in 19th-century Tabriz. Focusing on their neighborhoods, religious and educational institutions, and interactions with the Shia majority, it examines patterns of coexistence, cooperation, and tension. Using archival documents and manuscripts in Persian and Turkish (while learning Armenian during the course of the study), the research sheds light on minority-majority relations, urban culture, and the role of Armenians in Tabriz’s economic and social life.
Research Focus and Interests:
- Cultural and social history of minority communities in Iran
- Social history of Iran in the 19th century
- Archival research and manuscript studies
- Intellectual and cultural developments in the Caucasus and Iranian borderlands
- Religious elites and minority communities in social and cultural history
